David Nichols “We”

At first, this seems strange, but an affair with the Zamyatinsky name still has the slightest attitude to anti -utopias. This is a delicate lyrical story about the family.

At first, this seems strange, but an affair with the Zamyatinsky name still has the slightest attitude to anti -utopias. This is a delicate lyrical story about the family. Even so: about the family. Typical, and maybe archetypal. Husband and wife lived together for 25 years, he loved her very much, and she loved him as she could, they gave birth to a son and lived happily. The son grew up and will leave to study in the fall. And the wife of the main character, Douglas, suddenly reports: their marriage is exhausted. But they have a whole summer and a big journey through Europe ahead. One summer for three, then to part later. Reading the novel, I always caught myself thinking: everything that Douglas tells us about my family, love, life – the novel is written on his face – I am very familiar, although I am not a biochemist of 54 years. And what he talks about his wife is also very familiar, although I am not a British artist, I don’t understand art too much, I did not have so stormy youth and I do not really like Bohemia. Then it remains to admit that, like their son, art museums are more interesting to me more than military-historical. And fall in love with a girl with an accordion because she plays Smells Like Teen Spirit

, the cult song “Nirvana”. They are very different, these heroes. But any of us may be in their place. Simple everyday story in the spirit of a confessional novel. A living nonlinear story, where the heads of first acquaintance, the first kiss, sex, dance, quarrels are interspersed with the chapters with them, but the last (or still not the last?) – but you don’t get confused in the composition. Measured pace, prescribed characters, human dialogs, a good language, a translation that you don’t feel at all-all this is so nice and so long ago has not come across in the genre of a love-family novel, what else to wish.
